HERITAGE PARK | SALEM, INDIANA

I worked with LAA Office to plan for the implementation of this asphalt mural as part of a placemaking project through the Indiana University Center for Rural Engagement. The pattern is inspired by the traditional craft of barn quilting. It weaves the city center with a preserved heritage site that hosts log cabins and pieces of the city from its inception. This new public space also incorporates a wall mural honoring the women of Salem, IN along with an adjacent deck with seating and planters.

THE LUMIERE BALL

I was invited to contribute an installation surrounding mental health at Lumiere Ball 💬🌿

“I’ve Been Big and Small” will consist of works on mirrors that dare us to feel rooted within the highs and lows, the storms, the overwatering, neglecting, the wilting, the blooming, the beautiful chaos of embodying a living being.

Lumiere was held at Fountain Square Mall on April 13th, 2019 and proceeds were raised for Mental Health America of Monroe County + the Amethyst House.

Experimental Drawing with Kristy Hughes

In June of 2017, I connected with artist Kristy Hughes and invited her to present a variety of experimental drawing techniques at the Untitled Light studio. Techniques such as fumage, frottage, collage, and décollage were demonstrated.

Portrait Painting with Ben Pines

I reached out to local painter and seasoned artist Ben Pines to host a 5-week portrait-painting course. Before this program, Ben had not the opportunity, space, or resources to teach a class and so through Untitled Light I was happy to provide everything he needed as well as monetary compensation for his time. Student experience ranged from “never before painted” to professional artist. 12 students total took part in the class.
The class was affordable, unique, and intimate, giving participants time to learn individually alongside Ben as he demonstrated from a live model we paid to join us. Ben presented basic techniques for drawing and painting from observation. He offered his suggestions and thoughts on participants’ work based on his technical training and life as an artist. Examples from art history and his own work were used to explain or clarify ideas.

Ben’s psychologically subtle, atmospheric portrait paintings engage the viewer. Their careful attention to form and compositional movement combine aspects of figurative and abstract painting in a unique synthesis. Ben has been offering private lessons in drawing and painting since 2012. More information on the artist may be found at benpines.com.

The Yoga of Creativity

Summer 2017

I worked with Erin Thomas of Vibe Yoga Studio to bring a special series pairing yoga and art throughout the Bloomington area. Interactive, multi-locational, site specific creative body movement experiences based on the 5 senses.

The series was designed to open up the channels of personal creativity by journeying through the senses. Five unique yoga practices were paired with creative expression to allow practitioners to open and access deep levels of personal creativity. I live painted each student during one of the sessions which was a super fast paced and highly rewarding experience for both the students and my painting practice.

The Edible Carnival

Albuquerque based artist Russell Bauer.  Curated by yours truly.

With his extensive knowledge of construction and life-based systems, Russell creates allegorical, performative, often kinetic installation works, using art to connect humans to sustainability. Russell’s art practice focuses on the basic human needs for food, water, and shelter in the realities of contemporary society. The Edible Carnival is a blend of technological exploration, social experimentation, open source database: a traveling spectacle of productive food systems, conceptually engaging fantasy, and functional paintings.

The Edible Carnival debuted in Bloomington on Friday, June 3rd from 5-8 PM at Blueline Gallery with a unique, interactive reception.

"Now we consider the things we produce, that which is left behind, and how they will travel through time. How they will be remade. And if we live a truly rich life, the next lives can be even richer."

Featuring:
- Rotisserie Chariot
- Wall Handle installation
- Functional Paintings

SHOP TALK: The Art of Green Living

I put together a panel of sustainable living and working gurus to speak at a free event following The Edible Carnival.

The panel featured Russell Baue), Sean Starowitz (Director of the Bloomington Arts District & artist), Julie James (Owner of local organic, Blue Farm & advocate for wholesome living), and Daniel Weddle (local tiny home builder and advocate for eco-living).

An evening of discussion, ideas, education, and a look into the worlds of the panel of featured creatives. We sipped in-house healthy juices and cocktails, ate organic hors d'oeuvre creations, and after the talks hung out and share ideas about the importance of wholesome living and ongoing community / personal projects.
