Concept Sketches
The triangular canopy solution I designed serves as place that carries work into play. Made of 8” laminated steel rods and standing at 18ft tall, this big playground shed alternates roles as a shade structure for Cummins parking during the week and a weekend location for people of all backgrounds at the Columbus Farmers Market. The 4 colors blend and fuse as you walk around the structure. It is an experiential metaphor that operates as a symbol for the importance of the blending of cultures.
Physical Module Model
In order to be most accessible to the community, I proposed moving the market site from where it currently takes place in the center of the Cummins parking lot down to 5th street along the Avenue of Architects in Columbus. This shift in location will allow the canopy to best serve the purpose of calling pedestrians from the notable architecture of 5th street, through the porticos of the Cummins Corporate Office, into Mill Race Park and ultimately up the Mill Race tower where one can then emerge above the site to witness the trajectory they have just made. This example of collective experience is the backbone of this project and what, to me, constitutes a successful community gathering space.
