Roman Multifamily Dwelling

The seed for this design grew from time spent in Rome, walking the streets all day every day for a month. Basalt cobblestones that are famously Roman become the glue that pieces together the experience of the city. Rome remains just as it has for centuries. Erecting something new on such an antiquated site meant that the material had to express humility and solidity.

Lakeside Community Boathouse

Sloping hills and a narrow, winding road welcomes visitors to Lake Salinda's north side. After four swooping turns, the road suddenly straightens out and trees block the view of the lake for 2000 feet, or roughly one-third of a mile. At the end of this long stretch, the Salinda Community Boathouse emerges as a familiar, minimal form that is embedded into the existing directionality of the landscape.

Icelandic Cave Visitors Center

From afar, visitors spot a nebulous mass erupting from the volcanic terrain.  Hurrying towards it, they park and arrive at a walkway that takes them to the enigmatic “glacier” where it is perched at the mouth of a giant fault line between two continents. Pulled by the glowing translucency of a system of polycarbonate panels, visitors are enveloped by the glowing skin, entering into a Halcyon where Iceland’s unique position on Earth becomes unequivocal.

Cambodian Hideout Hut

Grounding eco concrete set in steel framing connects deep into the ground and taps into the life force of the earth. Wrapped in bamboo, which is symbolic for strength, flexibility, and resilience, these huts emerge from the Cambodian jungle as beacons of soothing simplicity. The strength of opposing forces, as taught in yoga, can be felt in the contrast of materiality and light.

Elementary School

Multi-level, interconnected, and self-aware spaces foster learning as a continuous experience. What is of utmost importance in education is whether spaces inspire inclusivity, possibilities, community, wonder, and hopefully, empathy. This primary school employs a stacked, sensorial experience of growth in order for students to feel like they are a part of something big and important.

Library Addition

The Cleo Rogers Memorial Library by I.M. Pei is a sea of concrete and brick where compressed moments meet open areas created by carved out spaces and geometric subtraction. My investigation found that the expansive spaces still feel cave like and dark due to the slab of coffered ceilings that weigh over every room. My addition design was led by the desire for lightness to aleviate the compressed feeling of the original design while still offering diffused light.

Urban Canopy

Using contextual elements, I set out to design an urban canopy for the Columbus Farmers Market with strong connections to both the surrounding nature and the nature of the local community.
